Open the Door

I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

Revelation 3:20

Horrific. The news that Germanwings flight 9525 was deliberately crashed into a mountainside by a despairing copilot shocked the world. He locked the pilot out of the cockpit while terrified passengers screamed, knowing there was no escape from certain death. If the he had simply opened the door, perhaps someone could have offered him hope, and saved many lives, including his.

Our world is full of people despairing and uncertain about where to turn, begging for someone to rescue them from their rapid descent into disaster. Just as airliners were not designed to be flown by a single person, God did not design people to navigate the intricacies of life alone. He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”(Matthew 11:28)

Too many people lack a pilot to keep them on course, but Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him. In John 16:33, He says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” God provided a pilot for our lives when He sent, Jesus to earth, and He offers rest for the souls of all who allow Him into their lives.

With Christ in control we have power to overcome life’s trials and fears in His strength. Ephesians 1:18-21 says, “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in His holy people,  and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength  He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead…” It doesn’t mean we’ll live trouble free, but He offers wisdom, guidance, and hope to navigate us safely through life’s trials.

Just like that German copilot had the choice to open the cockpit door and allow the pilot to help him, we have the choice to open the door of our hearts and allow Jesus to pilot our lives. He promises to guide us safely through the trials of life. There are no crash landings with God. Just open the door.
